Where oh where have my customers gone:
Or “Do you have the right focus on your website?”
One of the main reasons I have found for a lack of interest in a website is poor marketing focus.
As an example of this I will tell you a true story.
I have a friend who wanted to buy some software from a major online business. She went to their
very impressive website to see what version and what features she needed for her new start up
business. She made her choice and then spent the next 20 minutes trying to find out where on this
site was the “BUY ME” button. Now most of us would have stopped WAY before that and simply gone
to another site. However my friend is very determined and contacted the IT department, asking
them “How do I buy your product?” The tech walked her through the menus to the bottom corner
of one of the pages, and there it was is small print the words “purchase product”. Wow, I admire my
friends tenacity but how many of your customers would really spend that long in a search for
something that should be obvious.
The fact of the matter is, if you have a business, your website should be designed for one purpose -
to sell something. If you have a brick and mortar business you also want to have your address and
phone number very prominent - as many people use their phones as a phone book, to look up your
address and phone number.
According to Televox “94 percent of smartphone owners look for local information on their phone”
and “When searchers seek local information, 70 percent connect with the business”.
So when you are looking at your website or are considering getting someone to custom design your website,
ask your self these questions.
“If I was looking to buy this product, could I do so easily?
“If I wanted to visit/call this business - can I do so from my smart phone conveniently?”
Don’t let your web-page/website fall into the highly artistic but useless category
- make your website work for you.
